CJ Martin, owner of Invictus Fitness in San Diego, is arguably
one of the best coaches in the sport of CrossFit. He has
coached several Games athletes including, but not limited to, Josh
Bridges, Aja Barto, Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet, Valerie Vobril, Cheryl
Brost, myself and of course the infamous Team Invictus.
Needless to say, he knows what he's doing with programming for the
sport of fitness…but beyond that his heart and soul are dedicated
to helping individuals be their best and achieve their goals.
CJ has developed what he calls the "Invictus Athlete's Camp".
Last season, he held two camps at his gym for his athletes.
The camps consisted of olympic lifting work with Coach B,
gymnastics work with Carl Paoli, mobility work with Kelly Starrett,
and mental training with Heidi Fearon. As an athlete, having
the opportunity to learn from these experts along side some of the
best athletes in the world is irreplaceable. I was able to
attend both and left a better athlete each time.
October 5th, 6th, and 7th
marked the first time the Invictus Athlete's Camp has been held at
a different gym than Invictus. 2011 games competitor and
owner of CrossFit Marysville, Noah Pester, opened up his gym in
Marysville, WA for athletes to partake in a similar experience as
explained above. This time, myself and several other of CJ's
Games athletes had the opportunity to be on the other side of the
camp as coaches. Camille took on the gymnastics
component. Dutch Lowy and Cody Bergener tackled olympic
lifting. Shane Farmer taught everyone how to row
properly. Josh and I discussed mental toughness.
Nichole DeHart (a girl who does it all very well) assisted with
every component. As a team of coaches, we held a camp for a
variety of athletes at different levels and I can honestly say it
was one of the most fun times I've ever had coaching.
The athletes were all very receptive to the training techniques
we coached. They all participated in discussions, asking
questions, giving their input and really wanting to learn how we,
as elite level athletes, approach our training, our nutrition, and
our mental game. I am honored to have been a part of the
Invictus coaching staff and to have been able to share this
information with athletes who have goals of making it to regionals,
the games (first timers and repeats) or just being the best
athletes they can be.
If you're interested in attending a weekend like this, on
November 9th, 10th, 11th we will
be having another camp in San Diego at CJ's gym. There are a
few spots still open…sign up fast!
