2012 Reebok CrossFit Games Recap: Monday - Day 1

  • Jul 30, 2012

Training for an event for 10 months doesn't typically leave a person without some sort of wishful thinking or expectations for what they will see, how they performance and the outcome of the event.  My 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games experience was no different.  I wanted to see certain events, I wanted so badly to be on that podium on Sunday, and I was expecting the event to be nothing but fun by pouring my heart and soul into each event with the world's top CrossFit athletes.  Sometimes things just don't turn out like we hope but it's important to remember that everything happens for a reason.

Let me start from the beginning…day by day…

    Monday 7/9/12:

As my plane was approaching Long Beach Airport, I looked out my window and saw the beach/ocean and immediately got butterflies remembering the swim from the 2011 Games.  At that moment I had a gut feeling that we were going to be revisiting the Pacific Ocean at some point this week.  I put that thought behind me once hitting ground, deplaning and getting my rental car as I headed for The Marriot Manhatten Beach to individual athlete check-in.  Walking in the doors of the hotel, the anxiousness that had been churning my insides turned into excitement as I reunited with some of the other athletes as we received our packages from Reebok.  The gear was more than I could have ever imagined...everything was a step up from last year for sure.  The clothes all fit great, the shoes were more comfortable and the colors brought me back to the 80's (LOVE THE 80's). There was of course a bit of suspicion of the events once receiving a rash guard along with the rest of our gear.  "Ocean swim, ocean swim, ocean swim" flashing through my mind once again.

(pic from the plane as I was approaching Long Beach...sorry it's sideways...cldn't figure out how to rotate it)

After dragging all my gear to my hotel, hitting up Trader Joe's for food for the week and taking a moment to decompress after the flight, I headed back to the Marriot where we were all bussed to a restaurant overlooking Manhatten Beach for dinner.  It was a great opportunity to catch up with the other competitors and eat some good grub before getting a slap in the face from Dave Castro…we all knew it was coming.  The first event was announced…A TRIATHLON…on Camp Pendleton!!!  700m ocean swim with fins, 8K bike on a single speed and an 11K trail run.  The first event of 15 for the weekend! How did I feel about this??  At first, incredibly shocked and a little freaked about the swim.  I'd never had fins on my feet in my life and had only swam in the ocean 3 times…but I LOVE to mtn bike and I LOVE to run…both two of my favorite activities.  As if the shock of the triathlon wasn't enough, it just so happens that it was going to take place on WEDNESDAY…the first time in Games history that the event has started early and had a rest day (Thursday).

There was a roar of chatter amongst the athletes as the workout was announced (after a few seconds of silent shock).  The bus ride back to the Marriot was filled with people giving their thoughts and opinions on the news, but when it came down to it, there was nothing that we said that was going to change what we had to do...that is The CrossFit Games.

With the surprise tri announcement…it was time to head to bed.
